After a bitter defeat at the hands of Rennes in the French Cup final, Paris Saint Germain lost to Montpellier 2-3 in Ligue 1 34 round. Having to leave empty-handed does not really affect PSG, because they successfully defended the Ligue 1 championship from the previous round.
Montpellier: Oyongo (12 ‘, anti-home grid), Delort (80’), Camara (85 ‘)
PSG: Kimpembe (21 ‘, against the net), Di Maria (62’)
Unlike PSG that has run out of goals, Montpellier is in desperate need of a place to step into the top four, thereby winning the Europa League next season. If lucky, they can even attend the Champions League if they are in the top 3 BXH.
However, right in the 12th minute, the home team was hit by a cold water when Ambroise Oyongo attempted to break the ball and embarrassed the net. Fortunately for Montpellier, it was less than 10 minutes later, PSG defender Kimpembe gave the opponent a gift with a touch of the ball in the net, bringing the two teams back to the starting line.
By the 62nd minute, Ligue 1 champion once again surpassed the goal of midfielder Angel Di Maria. With a Zidane-like spin over the Lecomte goalkeeper before putting the ball into an empty net, the Argentinian winger scored one of the most memorable goals in his career.
Praiseworthy for the Montpellier players’ spirit when they refused to give up after this goal. Despite having to compete with PSG much stronger, the players of Coach Der Zakarian played full of courage. The reward for them was two quick goals scored by Delort (80 ‘) and Camara (85’).
In the few remaining minutes, PSG did not really try to find a deal and in the end Montpellier protected the fragile advantage. Thus, PSG only won a quarter of the recent match (losing 4). This is an achievement that cannot make PSG fans happy even though their pet team has won the 8th Ligue 1 title.
Meanwhile, Montpellier after 3 consecutive victories climbed to the 5th position and now only 5 points behind is Saint-Étienne (54 compared to 59). With Ligue 1 still 4 rounds to finish, if Montpellier is on this good level, Montpellier will have a good chance of dreaming about the possibility of next European Cup.
